Although Ayios Neofytos Monastery is only a short drive from the lively town of Pafos, once you get there it feels as if you have been transported to a different era.
Expect to be amazed by two particular things upon arrival: the great number of cats that will greet you in the car park, and the breathtaking views you will enjoy over Pafos from this site located at 520 meters (1694 ft) in height.
The monastery was founded at the end of the 12th century by a Cypriot hermit and writer called Neofytos. It is built in what used to be an isolated location that the hermit chose to carve out his hermitage or enklistra. Here you will find some extraordinary caves containing a great collection of the finest Byzantine frescoes from the 12th to the 15th centuries.
At the monastery you will also see some of the best examples of post-Byzantine icons from the 16th century, and you can also visit the very interesting ecclesiastical museum with a variety of valuable relics.
Make sure you don't miss St. Neofytos' skull, which is kept in a silver reliquary, and watch (and why not join) the devoted who queue up to kiss it.
Highlights:
• The monastery offers one of the most amazing views over Pafos.
• The monastery's post-Byzantine icons from the 16th century are some of the best on the island.
• On the site you will also find the hermitage of Saint Neofytos, which consists of a series of caves decorated with extraordinary Byzantine frescoes from the 12th to the 15th centuries.
• The Saint's skull is on display to be kissed by the pilgrims who visit the monastery.
Look Out For:
• The visit to the caves requires some climbing.
• As in all churches and monasteries in Cyprus, wearing shorts, backless and sleeveless tops, and very short dresses should be avoided.
• The use of flash is prohibited as it may damage the icons and frescoes.
