Ancient Kition

Kition, one of the island's most important historic sites, is located where modern Larnaca is today. It was originally settled by the Mycenaean and the Phoenicians about 3000 years ago.

While not much remains of the old city, there are some remnants of temples and shrines that are definitely worth visiting.

This is one of the few sites in the world where you can see the remains of a civilisation that dates back to the 13th century BC and that had a harbour – of which you can still see the dockyard – from which agricultural products were exported to other ancient civilisations in the eastern Mediterranean, Egypt and the Aegean.

Highlights:

• One of the most important historic sites in Cyprus dating back to the 13th century BC

• Remains of the ancient Mycenaean Achaean and Phoenician civilisations have been found on the site

• This is the birthplace of Stoic philosopher Zeno

Look Out For:

• Do not plan a visit to the site on the weekend as it remains closed on Saturdays and Sundays

• No wheelchair accessible bathrooms
