Being one of the most important city kingdoms of ancient Cyprus, Amathous is a site (together with Kourion) that should be included in any visitor's tour of the island.

It is also the place where the ancient Hellenes decided to build a temple to worship Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty.

Aphrodite Amathousia, as she was locally known, is believed to have been born in Cyprus. Consequently, visiting a sanctuary built in her honour and where pilgrims from all over the island travelled in ancient times to worship her makes a lot of sense when you are touring the island of love.

Highlights:

• The ruins of a temple built to worship Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty

• One of the greatest places of worship in antiquity

• Located at the archaeological site of Amathous

Look Out For:

• No wheelchair access
